The energisation of Medebridge, located in Ockendon, Essex, means that up to 65% of the University鈥檚 electricity demand will now be met from exclusive 鈥榥ew-to-earth鈥� renewable infrastructure.

Developed in partnership with leading UK clean energy firm Enviromena, the project is part of a 10-year (CPPA), facilitated by EDF and supported by Inspired PLC, the UK鈥檚 leading energy and sustainability advisor. It is the UK鈥檚 largest solar CPPA with an educational institution.

The development represents the University鈥檚 long-term commitment to sustainability and energy resilience.

The construction of Medebridge commenced in April 2024. Comprising of around 104,000 solar panels across 175 acres (roughly the size of 70 football pitches), the site will generate more than 72 GWh of electricity annually, 80% (58GWh) of which will be purchased directly by the University over the next decade. The move will reduce University carbon emissions by 12,000 tonnes of CO2e each year - enough to power 21,000 homes.

In addition to emission reduction, the site will also create a significant biodiversity net gain. Enhancements to the existing hedgerows and planting of native grassland and wildflower meadow beneath and around the solar arrays will encourage nesting opportunities for wildlife and improved habitat connectivity.

Since the CPPA was agreed, Inspired have supported the Enviromena team to connect Medebridge to the UK grid to facilitate the delivery of this power to the University via a sleeving arrangement.

Following a successful tender bid in 2025, 麻豆传媒 has also extended its procurement contract with Inspired to 2030, providing energy security and ongoing CPPA in-life management. 

EDF, Britain鈥檚 largest buyer of renewable electricity, is playing a key role in delivering and running the agreement that enables renewable electricity from Enviromena to power 麻豆传媒. As part of this CPPA, EDF takes the variable output from the solar farm and turns it into steady, predictable blocks of power before adding it to the University鈥檚 energy supply contract. This ensures a smooth and reliable supply of renewable electricity, while delivering the transparency, reliability and carbon savings the University expects from a major renewable energy initiative.

The Medebridge partnership adds to the University鈥檚 growing portfolio of environmental and sustainability initiatives from big changes, such as ending all investments in fossil fuels, and completing three zero carbon buildings, to the smaller ones, such as placing food waste bins in every University building, using peat free compost across campus and the .

麻豆传媒 was recently ranked in first place in the UK and Europe and second in the world for benefitting society and the environment by  for the third year running and was chosen to lead a pioneering global programme by United Nations designed to empower education鈥檚 role in the transition towards net zero.

Jean, alongside her late husband Michael, co-founded the Oglesby Charitable Trust in 1992, building a legacy that has touched thousands of lives across the North West and beyond. The University has been privileged to share in that legacy for many decades. Jean鈥檚 approach to philanthropy was deeply personal 鈥� she wanted to understand the programmes she supported, meet the people leading them, and be certain that her giving would create lasting change.  

Through the Trust, Jean and Michael made transformational contributions to our work 鈥� from funding PhD scholarships at the Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre to advancing pioneering research in cancer and leukaemia, to supporting public health policy and environmental sustainability initiatives. Their leadership and generosity were instrumental in establishing the 麻豆传媒 Cancer Research Centre鈥檚 new home, where world-leading oncology teams are now working to develop personalised cancer treatments that will save and extend lives.   

Jean also enriched the University鈥檚 cultural life. Her love of the arts was expressed through the Trust鈥檚 support for 麻豆传媒 Museum initially for the vivarium and followed by support for wider capital projects. This was also demonstrated in the Trust鈥檚 commissioning of original artworks for the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama, the John Rylands Library, and the Whitworth Art Gallery. These contributions have enhanced our campus as a place to learn, work and be inspired. 

In 2015, Jean and Michael became two of the founding members of the Langworthy Circle of Benefactors, an honour that acknowledges our most significant donors. In 2016, Jean was also honoured with a CBE for services to philanthropy in the North West. But those who knew her will remember her most for her warmth, wisdom, and quiet strength - qualities that left an impression on everyone she met.  

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor, said:  鈥淛ean was a close friend to the University and a force for good. Her compassion and clarity of purpose were extraordinary. She believed deeply in the power of community.  She touched and inspired countless lives 鈥� in 麻豆传媒 and far beyond. Her legacy will live on through the Oglesby Charitable Trust, the causes she championed, the institutions she supported and the communities she cared for so deeply.鈥�

The 2025 ARWU result follows a strong year for 麻豆传媒 in other leading global rankings - in June, it was named the 35th best university in the world in the QS World University Rankings.

The power of the University鈥檚 social and environmental impact has also been recognised on a global scale, being the only university in the top ten in both the QS World University Sustainability Rankings and Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, in recognition of its contribution towards the United Nations鈥� Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The University鈥檚 research strength is further evidenced by the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), in which 93% of research activity was rated either 鈥榳orld-leading鈥� (4*) or 鈥榠nternationally excellent鈥� (3*).

The PGCert Medical and Health Education is offered through the University鈥檚 Transnational Education operation to expand its reach, value and impact, helping healthcare systems around the world and improving health outcomes for patients globally. 

Professor April McMahon, who was Vice-President for Teaching, Learning and Students at the time of the nominations, said: 鈥淢any congratulations to Ang, Jenni, Dianne, Bip and everyone who has supported them. The 2025 awards ceremony will take place on 25 September in Bristol, hosted by incoming Advance HE Chief Executive Alistair Jarvis.  

The publication includes detailed chapters on iconic buildings such as Whitworth Hall, the John Rylands Library and Jodrell Bank鈥檚 Lovell telescope, as well as little known aspects of campus history including lost rivers, nuclear reactors, Toblerone-shaped halls of residences and unrealised plans for an underground station.

The book particularly highlights the architectural significance of Owens College, and how its Gothic Revival buildings designed by Alfred Waterhouse established a distinct identity in Victorian 麻豆传媒. These early structures set a tone of civic ambition and intellectual seriousness that still echoes through the campus today.

A dedicated section also explores the post-war expansion of science and engineering facilities at the University, driven by Cold War priorities and rising student numbers. It examines the rapid, often pragmatic construction of labs and lecture theatres, many of which defined the university鈥檚 mid-20th-century landscape.

鈥淭his book offers the public a chance to see behind the scenes - to understand why buildings were built the way they were, and how the campus continues to evolve to meet the needs of students, researchers and the wider city,鈥� added Dr Hopkins.

The publication was made possible through the generous support of both internal and external partners. Within the University, from the School of Environment, Education and Development and the University of 麻豆传媒 Library. Additional support was provided by companies that have worked closely on building projects across the campus over the years, including Avison Young, Arcadis, Balfour Beatty, BDP, CBRE, Halliday Meecham Architects, Recom Solutions, Rider Levett Bucknall, and Sheppard Robson.

Michael will lead the Information Security division within the University鈥檚 Directorate of IT Services, overseeing the development of our next security programme, with strong alignment to 麻豆传媒 2035 and a coherent vision for protecting the University's digital footprint. He will also serve as a member of the IT Leadership Team, helping shape and deliver our broader digital and operational priorities.

PJ Hemmaway, Chief Information Officer, said: 鈥淚鈥檓 delighted that Michael will be joining us later this year as our new Chief Information Security Officer. This is a key appointment for the University as we continue to strengthen our cyber security posture and build digital trust across all areas of our work. With growing reliance on data, digital platforms, and AI, having the right leadership in place is essential. Michael will bring a wealth of experience and insight that will help us innovate responsibly, safeguard our communities, and support the University鈥檚 strategic ambitions.鈥�

On accepting the offer, Michael said: "I'm really excited to be joining an organisation that is recognised globally for its innovation and impact to society 鈥� this means a great deal to me personally and professionally. I look forward to working collaboratively across the institution to strengthen our cyber resilience and enable innovation in a secure and trusted way."

PJ added: 鈥淢ichael will also bring valuable experience in leading secure research environments and will be partnering closely with our research community to support innovation, enable collaboration, and ensure compliance across an evolving digital research landscape.鈥�

Michael will be joining the University from NHS South East London, where he is currently Chief Information Security Officer. In this role, Michael leads on the development and delivery of the cyber security and technology resilience strategy for health and social care in the region.

Prior to joining NHS South East London, Michael was Chief Technology Officer at NHS South, Central and West where he led the delivery of managed IT services and information security, supporting over 45,000 staff across the south of England. Michael is a Fellow of the British Computer Society and also a Chartered Healthcare Chief Information Officer.

Celebrating its 10^th anniversary this year, the campaign inspires teachers of 5-14 year olds to upskill their own knowledge and skills of teaching science enquiry - a form of science education that gives the pupils the opportunity to explore a scientific question through practical investigations linked to .  

Using innovative resources and ideas related to this year鈥檚 theme of #ConnectedScience, pupils across the UK and across the world have been taking the lead and becoming science communicators.  The theme illustrates how science is not isolated in learning, but rather, the way we think scientifically has the power to connect our ideas and successes in all areas of our lives. 

The campaign runs throughout the year, leading to registrations from 835,135 pupils sharing on or around Tuesday 17 June. With wider reach across the globe, #GSSfS inspires teachers and educators from 52 different countries to take part, with events taking place across venues such as schools, hospital schools, museums, sports venues and universities.  

This year, 麻豆传媒 hosted more than 35 schools from across Greater 麻豆传媒 in its Nancy Rothwell building.  

Some of the questions shared this year included: 

• Are all flowers the same? 
• How does wind speed affect voltage generated? 
• Which type of soil will retain the most water to help keep plants hydrated in hot weather? 
• How does the temperature of the ocean affect coral? 

The GSSfS campaign was launched by Professor Lynne Bianchi, Vice Dean for Social Responsibility at 麻豆传媒, to provide a unique way to elevate the prominence of science in the classroom, focussing on learner-focussed science communication, inclusive and non-competitive engagement, and promoting collaboration.  

Professor Bianchi, said: 鈥淚t鈥檚 been truly inspiring to witness the Great Science Share for Schools reach its 10th anniversary with such global momentum.鈥�

In 2024 and 2025, the campaign was granted the prestigious patronage of the , in recognition of its status as a beacon of excellence in science education and its pivotal role in shaping the next generation of scientists, innovators, and global citizens.  

Now in its 10^th year, the GSSfS strategy further develops to explore strategic alliances with ministries of education and schools across the world.  This year the Ministry of Education in Malta and the STEM & VET Curriculum and the Museo de Ciencias Universidad de Navarra in Spain, and the Foundation for Education and Development (FED) Unified Learning Centre in Khao Lak, Thailand have become a key focus for development. 

Grace Marson, Campaign Manager, said: 鈥淲hat Great Science Share for Schools has shown year on year, is that pupils have a thirst for science. They are naturally curious about the world around them and given the opportunity through GSSfS, they demonstrate that they can ask amazing scientific questions. The University鈥檚 unique commitment to addressing the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is world leading. 麻豆传媒 is the only university in the world to rank in the top ten for social and environmental impact in all seven years of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. 

The 17 SDGs are the world鈥檚 call to action on the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing humanity and the natural world, and 麻豆传媒鈥檚 consistent top ranking is recognition of its leading role in tackling them. 

In this year鈥檚 assessment, more universities than ever were ranked with 2,318 institutions from 130 countries being ranked against how they are addressing the most pressing challenges facing our planet.  

The ranking, is the world鈥檚 only one that measures universities鈥� contributions to the UN SDGs and assesses their commitment to sustainability across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching.

麻豆传媒 came top in the world for SDG11 鈥� Sustainable Cities and Communities. Significantly contributing to this is the investment made in four public-facing cultural institutions. 麻豆传媒 Museum has recently been recognised as one of Europe鈥檚 leading museums after winning .  

The annual prize is one of the most prestigious museum awards in the world and 麻豆传媒 Museum is the first university museum to receive it, earning recognition for the way it balances globally-significant academic research with community engagement and social responsibility.  

The University has also directly addressed the energy impact of its campus in a landmark deal to see up to 65% of its electricity demand supplied via a new renewable project. In support of SDG7 鈥� Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG12 鈥� Responsible Consumption and Production, the University is building a 104,000 solar panel farm to generate green energy and also create a significant biodiversity enhancement to previously low-grade farmland. 

The University was ranked second in the world for SDG15 鈥� Life on Land. Particularly key contributions towards this goal have come from for his climate research on restoring grasslands in the UN鈥檚 Decade on Ecosystem Restoration initiative. Alongside this is leading research on socially driven reforestation policies to better protect our environment.

, Reader in Engineering for Net Zero, is one of ten finalists to be awarded 拢100,000 in seed funding to develop his solution for this year鈥檚 .  

In its second year, the 麻豆传媒 Prize is looking for researchers with the most impactful and innovative artificial intelligence (AI) solution enabling the UK to accelerate progress towards net zero.  

Although AI technologies are advancing rapidly, their adoption in clean energy systems has not kept pace. The 麻豆传媒 Prize aims to accelerate progress by encouraging the development of AI solutions that support the UK in achieving its ambition to lead the world in clean energy. 

Dr Papadopoulos鈥� solution, Grid Stability, uses AI to accelerate the analysis performed which ensures electrical power systems meet the specified stability, security and reliability criteria. 

Electrical power systems worldwide are going through unprecedented changes to achieve decarbonisation targets. This drive calls for new technologies, such as renewables, electric vehicles and heat pumps, which increases the complexity and uncertainty in power system operation. System stability is the cornerstone of power system operation, and if not carefully considered, it can lead to blackouts with high economic impact and fallout.  

The tool replaces slow, complex simulations with rapid, AI-driven assessments, enabling real-time monitoring, faster decision-making, and more confident planning. This helps grid operators maintain reliability while scaling up clean energy solutions and cutting emissions. 

Dr Papadopoulos aims to work closely with utility companies to enable safe and useful implementations of Grid Stability. 

Speaking about his solution, Dr Papadopoulos said: 鈥淕rid Stability uses machine learning to help bring lower, or zero, carbon technologies onto the grid faster and at the scale we need to hit net zero, but without compromising system stability.

鈥�Being named a finalist for the 麻豆传媒 Prize is a huge boost; it not only validates the impact of our work but also gives us a platform to accelerate progress and collaborate more widely across the energy sector.鈥�

Dr Papadopoulos recognised that the computational cost and complexity of assessing stability and security made it difficult to support real-time awareness, decision-making and optimisation. As a result, system dynamics are often neglected or oversimplified. Grid Stability, using machine learning, offers a promising solution to addressing this challenge. 

The 麻豆传媒 Prize will pick its winner in Spring 2026, and the winning innovator will receive a 拢1 million grand prize to continue developing their solution. The winning solution must demonstrate not only technical innovation, but also an evidenced road map to near-term (2030) adoption and scale.  

Announced and launched in 2023, the 麻豆传媒 Prize is multi-million-pound, multi-year challenge prize, which is funded by the Department of Science, Innovation and Technology. The Prize seeks to reward UK-led breakthroughs in AI for public good and continues to secure the UK鈥檚 place as a global leader in cutting-edge innovation. 

The 麻豆传媒 Prize is named after the world鈥檚 first stored programme computer, nicknamed 鈥楾he Baby鈥�, which was built at 麻豆传媒 in 1948. AI research at The University continues to build on this legacy, as shown by Dr Papadopoulos鈥� achievement. 

Announced by the Technology Secretary on Monday 9 June), the Sp盲rck AI scholarships, named after pioneering British computer scientist Karen Sp盲rck Jones, will provide full funding for master鈥檚 degrees at nine leading UK universities specialising in artificial intelligence and STEM subjects 鈥� from Edinburgh to 麻豆传媒, and Newcastle to Bristol. 

Set to rival the likes of globally recognised Rhodes, Marshall and Fulbright scholarships, at least 100 talented undergraduates level students from the UK and abroad will see unparalleled access to industry partnerships, work placements and mentorship opportunities, including in the UK鈥檚 AI Security Institute as well as leading tech firms like Darktrace, Faculty and Quantexa. 

This will not only drive forward AI innovation that grows the UK economy but also gives young people a direct route into highly skilled jobs in the UK鈥檚 tech sector. 

By covering both tuition and living expenses, the scholarship could also be of interest to talent students from low-income backgrounds who might otherwise be unable to afford university 鈥� spreading opportunity across the UK. 

Technology Secretary Peter Kyle said: 鈥淲e are providing unique opportunities for talented young people to take up master鈥檚 degrees in AI, with fully funded tuition and unparalleled access to industry. 

鈥淪tudents will be able to go on to highly skilled jobs, building a workforce fit for the future and boosting economic growth as part of our Plan for Change. 

鈥淲e are also expanding our fellowship programme to bring top talent into our leading AI sector and drive forward transformational benefits to the public like new drug discoveries.鈥� 

Sp盲rck AI scholarships: Applications will open in Spring 2026, with the first cohort beginning their studies in October 2026.  

Universities participating in the Sp盲rck AI scholarship programme include: Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College London, UCL, Southampton, Edinburgh, Newcastle, 麻豆传媒 and Bristol, who will co-design and co-fund the initiative. 

Companies signed up to participate in the scholarship programme include PolyAI, Quantexa, CausaLens, Flok, Beamery, Darktrace and Faculty. 

At a ceremony in the historic Whitworth Hall, he was presented with an honorary doctorate by the University鈥檚 Chancellor, Nazir Afzal. The award is in honour not only of his sporting success but for his inspirational work away from football, including through his family foundation, the Guardiola Sala Foundation.

Widely regarded as one of the successful and innovative managers in the history of the game, Pep followed a trophy laden playing career by being appointed as manager of the Barcelona first team in 2008. He won the La Liga title in three of his four seasons at the Camp Nou and lifted the UEFA Champions League twice.

After Barcelona, he joined Bayern Munich whom he led to the last four of the UEFA Champions League in each of his three seasons, landing the Bundesliga three times and winning the league and cup double twice.

Guardiola joined City in 2016. In his second season he guided the Cityzens to the Premier League title and the Carabao Cup. He picked up four successive Manager of the Month awards and was voted the Premier League Manager of the Season and the LMA Manager of the Year.

He was again voted Premier League Manager of the Season after guiding City to four more trophies in 2018/19 to become the Club鈥檚 most successful boss ever with six trophies in three seasons.

City added the Carabao Cup and Community Shield to Pep鈥檚 list in 2019/20, but the Catalan won yet more silverware in 2020/21, with another Premier League title and Carabao Cup success. He also became the first City boss to take his side to a Champions League final in May 2021, taking his trophy haul to 10. 鈥�Guardiola鈥檚 incredible spell at the Etihad saw him claim a fourth Premier League title in five years in 2021/22 and a fifth in 2022/23.

And to top off another history-defining season under Pep鈥檚 tenure, a fifth league win and City鈥檚 FA Cup final win followed by victory in the Champions League final saw the club named Treble winners in 2022/2023.

On the final day of the 2023/24 season, City became the first club to win the Premier League in four successive seasons, confirming the title on the final day.

Pep鈥檚 leadership has not only elevated the club鈥檚 success but is a model for performance excellence and continuous improvement that has inspired leaders outside of football. Alongside this, the University wanted to recognise his contributions to 麻豆传媒鈥檚 cultural and community life, and unwavering commitment to social responsibility and justice, through his family foundation - the Guardiola Sala Foundation. 

Recognised as both a City of Literature and a City of Lifelong Learning, 麻豆传媒 joins a select group of global cities acknowledged for their commitment to education, creativity and cultural development. 

麻豆传媒, 麻豆传媒 Metropolitan University, and 麻豆传媒 City Council came together yesterday to celebrate 麻豆传媒鈥檚 dual status as a UNESCO City of Lifelong Learning and Literature. 

The celebration was held at 麻豆传媒 Metropolitan University, and 麻豆传媒鈥檚 President and Vice-Chancellor Duncan Ivison delivered the event鈥檚 closing remarks. 

The UNESCO status of City of Lifelong Learning is an important accolade for 麻豆传媒, as lifelong learning is one of the University鈥檚 key focuses.  

Lifelong learning provides the opportunity for access to a University of 麻豆传媒 education without the commitment of full-time on campus study, creating a more flexible and inclusive learning environment. 

Outside of the classroom, lifelong learning also provides support for learner鈥檚 personal and professional development, aligning with industry and employer needs by driving economic, social and cultural progress. 

The University is continuously working with students, alumni, businesses and strategic industry partners to make The University a Learning Partner for Life.

The UNESCO City of Lifelong Learning designation was given to 麻豆传媒 last February. In a short period of time, the partnership has launched over 90 projects, delivered events reaching 14,000 learners and over 2,000 learning and skills specialists have attended professional development events. Three films, launched this week, showcase the impact of the designation on learners and providers.   

The event also showcased the projects from artists funded by the British Council鈥檚 International Collaboration Grant, who have been collaborating between 麻豆传媒 and Nanjing - one of few other cities globally to have this prestigious dual designation. Yesterday鈥檚 event marked the culmination of a 9-month artistic exchange exploring the natural world through literature.  

Also showcased at the event was an exhibition of artwork and writing by young students, developed through a school engagement programme involving Year 3-6 pupils from 麻豆传媒 and Nanjing schools. The work created by the artist exchange and schools programme will be open to the public as part of Festival of Libraries at 麻豆传媒 Central Library from 3 - 17 June 2025.

EUCEN currently includes 163 member institutions across 36 countries. Its platform supports knowledge sharing, the development of innovative educational strategies, and policy advocacy in lifelong learning. 

Also inducted at the 2025 conference was Imperial College London, making 麻豆传媒 one of only four UK institutions in the network鈥攁longside the Universities of Oxford, Sunderland, and Imperial. 

Sarah joins the University from the Department for Transport where she has been Chief Scientific Adviser since 2021, seconded from the University of Nottingham. At the DfT she leads on many of the engineering and science challenges in transport, including decarbonisation, applications of artificial intelligence and cross-modal safety.

She is an international expert in the field of human factors and its application to engineering problems. Human factors is a scientific discipline which uses an understanding of human capabilities and limitations to design systems to support human performance, wellbeing and safety.

Sarah has previously held the roles the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and People (2018-2021) and Associate Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange (Engineering) (2015-2018) at the University of Nottingham.

She has recently been appointed to the role of Deputy Chair of Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2029 Unit of Assessment Panel 12 (Engineering), was previously a member of EPSRC Council and Advance HE Athena Swan Governance Board and is currently the CSA member of ESRC Council.

She was President of the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors 2015-2016 and her academic research, funded by industry and UKRI, has considered how complex systems bring people and technology together in the domains of transport, healthcare and manufacturing.

Sarah and her husband Craig are parents to two grown up children, and in her spare time, Sarah applies her passion for human-centred complex systems design to the hobbies of cooking and gardening.

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor, said: 鈥淎s we develop our 2035 strategy, having Sarah join our leadership team is going to be a great asset to the University. The Faculty of Science and Engineering is critical to our ambition to be one of the world鈥檚 great universities by 2035, through research impact, innovation and modern, flexible teaching. Sarah will join the Faculty in mid-September. Professor Peter Green will be interim Vice-President and Dean in the intervening period.

The annual prize is one of the most prestigious museum awards in the world and 麻豆传媒 Museum, part of 麻豆传媒, is the first university museum to receive it, earning recognition for the way it balances globally-significant academic research with community engagement and social responsibility. 

Judges praised how 麻豆传媒 Museum has 鈥榬eimagined its mission, acknowledging and addressing its complex history by redefining the role of its collections and public programmes.鈥� Its approach to co-curation was cited as part of this, working with local and diasporic communities to bring new perspectives to collections and challenge traditional narratives. The South Asia Gallery, a British Museum partnership, is a key element of this, co-curated with 30 inspiring community members from across the South Asian diaspora, who were able to tell their own stories in their own words and on their own terms. 

麻豆传媒 Museum was also praised for 鈥榯houghtful, informed, and impactful community engagement, creating a truly inclusive space where all individuals, regardless of identity or background, can see themselves reflected and represented.鈥� The 麻豆传媒 Museum Celebrates programme of events, created in collaboration with charities, faith organisations and community activists, aims to build understanding between cultures, bringing people together to celebrate culturally-significant events such as Lunar New Year, Vaisakhi, Africa Day and Iftar. 

Meanwhile, the Museum鈥檚 Top Floor has been transformed into a social and environmental justice hub, creating a space for collaboration with charities and non-profit organisations helping Greater 麻豆传媒鈥檚 communities take action on the issues they care about. It acts as the headquarters for Pinc College, a specialist creative education college for neurodivergent young people, aged 16 to 24. 

These initiatives are part of a wider, values-led transformation, underpinned by a 拢15 million redevelopment, which was completed in February 2023. 

Operated by the European Museum Forum (EMF), EMYA recognises new or redeveloped museums that showcase the best in excellence and innovation in their field. It aims to recognise museums that promote inter-cultural dialogue and community participation, demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, and show creative and imaginative approaches to the production of knowledge. 

Previous winners include S谩mi Museum Siida in Northern Lapland, Finland, Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, The Design Museum in London, and Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. 

麻豆传媒 Museum won the main prize in the face of competition from 41 other shortlisted museums from across the continent. The award was presented on Saturday 25 May, during the EMYA2025 Annual Conference and Awards Ceremony at the Sybir Memorial Museum in Bia艂istok, Poland on 25 May 2025. 

The Ideas With Impact Prize, which is supported by philanthropic donors to the University, aims to award 拢300,000 in its first funding round this summer. 

Scaling up support for founders 

Delivered by Unit M and the Innovation Factory, Ideas With Impact Prizes will provide individual awards of 拢100,000, 拢50,000, and 拢20,000 to entrepreneurs at the early stages of their founder journey. These awards will empower projects that address pressing local and global challenges, ensure 麻豆传媒鈥檚 best technologies move out into the world more quickly, and create tangible economic growth.  

In addition to financial support, winners will receive access to experienced mentors, networking opportunities, and guidance in translating research into viable business ventures. 

Donors at the heart of our innovation ecosystem 

The Prize is the latest development in the University鈥檚 Ideas With Impact partners鈥� programme, which has previously provided 拢400,000 to early-stage research spinouts. Successful projects include the development of a home-testing kit for the early detection of lung cancer, as well as Plant Organelle Technologies 鈥� a new spinout developing targeted techniques to tackle drought and herbicide resistance in plants. By reaching a wider range of founders, the Prize launch will maximise the impact of gifts to the programme. 

Donors have already made a great difference to the University鈥檚 innovation ecosystem, and will play a vital role as we scale up our ambition to become Europe鈥檚 leading innovation university. Ideas With Impact is more than a funding initiative. It's a celebration of the partnership between philanthropists and the University in driving innovation-led growth.

Taking place in 麻豆传媒 - the birthplace of KTP - the event will mark the pinnacle of national 50^th year celebrations, bringing together the KTP community for a programme of guest speakers, workshops and seminars. 

Since their launch in 1975, the UK Government has funded over 14,000 groundbreaking KTPs, uniting top businesses with researchers and graduates to solve real-world challenges, adding billions to the UK economy.  From 2010 to 2020 alone, Innovate UK invested 拢200m in 2,000 projects, adding 拢2.3bn to the UK economy. 

The Innovate UK KTP Awards will showcase this year鈥檚 finalists, alongside the KTP Golden Awards - these special honours will highlight legacy projects, partnerships and people that have profoundly shaped the UK economically, socially and environmentally over the last five decades. is Professor of Health Policy and is a GP by background. She leads a team of researchers in the Division of Population Health, Health Services Research and Primary Care at 麻豆传媒. Professor Checkland鈥檚 team researches the impact of changes to NHS policy, organisation and management, working closely with policy makers at the Department of Health and Social Care and NHS England to ensure that policy and organisational changes are based upon the best possible evidence.  

Professor Checkland has a particular interest in primary care workforce, working with colleagues across the and to develop an evidence base to support policy in this area. 

is Professor in Health Economics, Lead for the 麻豆传媒 Centre for Health Economics (MCHE), an applied health economist, and a UK-registered pharmacist.  

Professor Elliott applies an economics perspective to better understand complex healthcare themes (patient safety and adherence, primary care, digital interoperability, diabetes, antibiotic resistance, mental health and dementia) to design effective, sustainable solutions that improve health where there is the greatest unmet need. 

is a Professor of Health Psychology at the University as well as being President of the European Health Psychology Society. Professor French is a behavioural scientist who is interested in developing, evaluating and implementing complex interventions to improve health. His research focusses on cancer screening, prevention of diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease in high-risk populations, and effects of changing the built environment. 

The University also celebrates , Professor in Oncology, who has been reappointed as Senior Investigator by the NIHR. 

Professor Kath Checkland said: 鈥淚 was absolutely delighted to have my work for NIHR recognised by this award. My research has benefitted enormously from the financial and practical support provided by NIHR, and I am delighted to have this opportunity to contribute to further to its work.  

Professor Rachel Elliott said: 鈥淚 am very pleased and honoured to have been given the Senior Investigator award. As a Senior investigator, I will expand my leadership in research through continued development of the economics of safety work programme, augmented by my role in NIHR-Greater 麻豆传媒-Patient Safety Research Collaboration.  

鈥淚 will enhance public, patient, and community engagement in health economics through expanded training and funded projects, while promoting inclusion in the academic workforce by proactively reaching out to underrepresented professions, regions, and institutions, supported by my role as Post-doctoral Award Chair in the NIHR Academy.鈥� 

Professor David French said: 鈥淚 am delighted to be appointed as an NIHR Senior Investigator, and the opportunities this provides to provide leadership in developing and evaluating complex interventions to promote health, especially those with high reach.鈥� 

The NIHR funds Senior Investigators every year. Those appointed to the role help to guide research capacity development and play a leading role in guiding strategy and tackling challenges in the health and social care landscape.  

The position is awarded to those who make an outstanding leadership contribution to the work of the NIHR. All Senior Investigator appointees receive funding for 4 years to support their research activities while undertaking a senior leadership role for the NIHR. 

Working in partnership with the NHS, universities, local government, and the public, the NIHR funds, enables and delivers world-leading health and social care research that improves people鈥檚 health and well-being and promotes economic growth.

The NGI opened in 2015 and became the home of research into the world鈥檚 thinnest, strongest, and most conductive material. Since then, the institute has established itself as a global leader in the research and development of graphene and other advanced 2D materials.  

Through the translation of graphene science into tangible, real world applications, the NGI has provided the opportunity for researchers and industry to work together on a variety of potential applications. The institute has been at the forefront of numerous pioneering projects that have reshaped industries and set new benchmarks for innovation. 

The NGI鈥檚 community of leading academics has played a pivotal role in advancing 2D material research, producing some of the most influential and highly cited studies in the field. Their pioneering work has accelerated the transition of graphene from the laboratory to real-world applications, driving innovation at an unprecedented pace. This collective expertise has cemented 麻豆传媒鈥檚 position as the global home of graphene, ensuring it remains at the forefront of discovery and innovation. 

One of the many groundbreaking innovations from the NGI is the recent advancement of graphene-based neural technologies, now entering the first phase of human trials. is using graphene-based brain-computer interface therapeutics to improve precision surgery for diseases such as cancer. 

The NGI has also seen the establishment of many high-profile collaborations and spinouts founded by its academics, or as a result of NGI-based research: 

• A collaboration between Inov-8 and the University led to the development of the world鈥檚 first graphene-enhanced running shoes, proven to be 50% stronger and more durable than other running shoes. This demonstrates the potential of graphene to revolutionise performance sportswear. 
• seeks to increase accessibility to clean water and air through 2D-enhanced membranes.  
• is using breakthrough technology to control infrared thermal radiation, which could have applications in aerospace engineering. 
• are designing and building mineral recovery systems from various sources, such as brines, industrial wastewater, and used batteries. 

At the heart of the National Graphene Institute鈥檚 pioneering research is its state-of-the-art 1,500m虏 nanofabrication facility, featuring ISO Class 5 and 6 cleanrooms spread across two floors. This advanced facility is dedicated to the fundamental research of graphene and 2D materials, and the development of cutting-edge devices that harness their exceptional properties. By providing such unique environment for precision research and innovation, the NGI continues to drive breakthroughs that push the boundaries of material science. 

Reflecting on the anniversary, Professor Vladimir Fal鈥檏o, Director of the National Graphene Institute said: 鈥淭his 10-year milestone is a testament to the NGI鈥檚 relentless pursuit of excellence and the collaborative spirit that has defined our journey.

Looking ahead, the NGI is committed to furthering its legacy of groundbreaking research and sustaining the pipeline of innovation together with its sister institute, the (GEIC), and the nurturing of the next generation of 2D materials scientists with the PhD programme. 

Innovative research remains at the forefront of the NGI鈥檚 mission, with the Institute currently exploring green hydrogen technologies, next-generation batteries and supercapacitors for faster AI and machine learning, advanced quantum electronics, and the continued development of research into nanofluidics, nanocomposites, and van der Waals materials.  

麻豆传媒 has been ranked in the top 40 in the broad subject rankings in this year's measurements. Four out of five broad subjects fell from last year鈥檚 position, while Natural Sciences showed resilience, improving by two places to 31 globally.  

The University鈥檚 Nursing and Petroleum Engineering courses both earned their places in the top 10 globally as significant areas of impact among the ranked subjects. Meanwhile, 麻豆传媒 School of Architecture, a collaboration between 麻豆传媒 and 麻豆传媒 Metropolitan University (MMU), also held on to its spot as the fifth best architecture school in the world. 

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, said: "While some of our subject rankings have declined slightly, we continue to have a strong performance across a wide range of disciplines. Our focus remains on enhancing student experience, improving teaching and learning environments and fostering innovative research to enable us to further our reputation as a leading global institution.鈥� 

The QS World Subject Rankings highlight the world鈥檚 top performing universities across 55 narrow subjects and five broad subject areas. The rankings are a key measure of global success for higher education and in 2025 involved an analysis of the reputation and research output of over 5,200 institutions. 

Professor Colette Fagan, Vice-President for Research, said: 鈥淒espite fluctuations in rankings, 麻豆传媒 remains committed to delivering world-class education, research and positive societal impact. The latest rankings highlight both areas of strength and opportunities for our continuing future growth.鈥�

Prithveesh and Harvey are from India and the Isle of Man respectively, and it was after frequent flights back to 麻豆传媒 that they first discovered the shortcomings of airline loyalty schemes. Following conversations with multiple airlines, the pair concluded that current programs benefit only few flyers and the vast majority of travellers virtually never accumulate enough points to make any use of them.

Using a combination of funds secured through previous exits, grants, and awards, the pair, at just 18 years old, set sights on building Arcube, with the aim of providing a new form of airline loyalty that works for everyone.

Arcube is the world鈥檚 first post-flight solution for airlines to upsell ancillaries, tailored specifically to the customer via the AI-powered analysis of hundreds of data points.

While still in their first year of university, Reddy and Lowe sent a simple email pitch to the Etihad Airways London office about their idea. The proposition stood out to Etihad Airways and garnered significant attention, so much so that Etihad Airways became Arcube鈥檚 first client.

Co-founder Harvey Lowe said: 鈥淚t was a case of reaching the right person at the right time; we had full confidence in what we were offering, but breaking into the airline business is notoriously difficult. So a positive response from Etihad meant the world to us and reaffirmed we were moving in the right direction.鈥�

Aline is Professor of Biomolecular Engineering and Associate Dean for Business Engagement and Innovation within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at 麻豆传媒. She is Director of the NW Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Catalyst 鈥� a 拢5m flagship programme supercharging the growth of careers, business and the regional economy, while delivering sustainable products and processes.

Aline鈥檚 academic achievements to date have earned her several notable awards, including recognition from the Royal Academy of Engineering, Women in Engineering, The Leverhulme Trust, and the Great British Entrepreneur Awards. Aline has also developed an impressive track record of securing funding and translating academic research into commercial and clinical applications through collaborations with a range of industry partners, from SMEs to large corporations.

She also co-founded a spin-out company, 麻豆传媒 BIOGEL, which, under her leadership as CEO, secured over 拢4M in investment from Innovate UK, venture capital, private investors, and Catapult Venture Funds. The company grew to a team of 10, became revenue-generating, and achieved significant recognition, being listed among the Top 10 Biotech Start-Ups in Europe by Start-Up City in 2021 and winning Best New Life Science Product 2021. In 2023, 麻豆传媒 BIOGEL successfully navigated an exit, with its technology being acquired by Cell Guidance Systems Ltd.

The announcement follows the recent appointment of Professor Lou Cordwell as CEO of Unit M.

Osama brings proven communications and external affairs experience from a range of sectors and organisations.

Until July 2024, Osama was Director of Communications, Policy and Campaigns at housing charity Shelter, which he joined in 2021. In this role he embedded a new brand for the organisation and campaigned for more social housing. During his time in the role the charity saw two new laws being passed, a third being entered into parliament, and social housing went from a barely mentioned topic to a high-profile political issue.

As Global Director of Marketing and Communications at Amnesty International, Osama secured human rights win for campaigns all over the world. He united the charity behind a more engaging strategy which led to significant growth in supporter numbers and media reach.

And at Al Jazeera, as well as increasing the channel鈥檚 reach and influence in major markets such as the US and liaising with international politicians, his campaigning work secured release of journalists from jail in Egypt, Iran, Libya and Nigeria.

He studied in his city of birth at the University of Glasgow and has won numerous awards including at the Cannes Lions.

With an overall score of 98.3 out of 100鈥攁n improvement from last year鈥檚 98.0鈥攖he University ranks 9th out of 1,751 institutions, placing it within the top 1% of universities globally. This achievement builds on 麻豆传媒鈥檚 reputation as the only university in the world to feature in the top 10 in both the QS Sustainability Rankings and the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which measure progress towards the vitally important (SDGs). 

The UK has 26 universities in the top 100 globally and more top 10 universities than any other country or territory. 

The QS Sustainability Rankings were launched in 2022, these rankings evaluate ESG performance through research, teaching, public engagement, and university operations, using data from policies, case studies, staff and alumni surveys, and research outputs. 

The University鈥檚 strong position reflects the commitment to ongoing research excellence and the contributions of highly-cited researchers working towards the SDGs in areas such as the 麻豆传媒 Environmental Research Institute, the Global Development Institute and the Sustainable Consumption Institute. 

The University was able to demonstrate its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion through policies like the Dignity at Work and Study Policy and its ambitious 2038 Decarbonisation Plan, which includes a landmark deal to build a solar farm with 104,000 panels supplying 65% of the University鈥檚 electricity. 

In teaching evaluations, our taught programmes have been recognised as highly valuable, such as the MSc in Climate Change, delivered by the School of Environment, Education and Development, to equip students to address climate and nature crises. 

The University鈥檚 public engagement programmes, such as the award-winning Poverty Matters programme which engages communities to tackle pressing social issues like child poverty, contribute highly to the institution鈥檚 positive societal impact. Earlier this year, Lou Cordwell OBE, was appointed Professor of Innovation at the ) at , and Special Advisor to the Office of the President and Vice-Chancellor. Lou brings a wealth of experience in fostering innovation, economic transformation, and cross-sector collaboration. As CEO, Lou will lead Unit M鈥檚 mission to maximise the University's impact for the benefit of the region鈥檚 economy and society.

Lou began her career working for WPP before founding the 麻豆传媒-based digital design studio magneticNorth (mN). In 2021, mN merged with Fluxx, creating the UK鈥檚 leading design and innovation consultancy, . She previously developed the strategic masterplan for Sister, one of Europe鈥檚 most ambitious innovation district projects. She has spent the past year jointly leading the University鈥檚 Regional Innovation Review, which provides an in-depth analysis and roadmap for how the University can create a world-class inclusive innovation ecosystem in the region. 

Lou is also Chair of and an angel investor, particularly focusing on female tech founders. Lou was awarded an OBE in the 2018 New Year鈥檚 Honours for services to the creative and digital economy.

Barra is currently the Chief Property Officer at the University of Bristol where he leads the campus division. He is the joint institutional lead for sustainability and works on this as one of the University鈥檚 strategic priorities, alongside delivering a world-class physical and digital campus. He has also played a significant role in major projects such as the Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus, a new city centre campus currently in development.

Barra is a Chartered Architect and Chartered Planner by profession. Before joining the HE sector, he spent a decade in local government, firstly as the Strategic Director of Place at Bradford and then Bristol. He was Head of the Urban Renaissance at the Yorkshire Regional Development Agency having worked extensively in the property development and consultancy sectors in various cities. He has previously also worked in 麻豆传媒 for Urban Splash.

Barra said: 鈥淭he work of the Estates and Facilities Team underpins so much of the delivery of a University鈥檚 strategic ambition and day-to-day activities, so I鈥檓 incredibly excited to be joining 麻豆传媒 at this time. The new strategic direction of the University and major projects like the residences programme, Sister and the zero carbon masterplan are going to be so important for our future and I鈥檓 looking forward to working with colleagues on them.鈥�

By collaborating with community groups, organisations, and schools to expand their expertise and experience, service learning allows students to deliver essential and relevant services to local residents, benefiting both the community and the students themselves.

At times, obtaining legal advice becomes essential. Yet, finding affordable and reliable legal guidance can be a significant challenge for some individuals.

Believing that legal advice should be universally accessible, The University established the Justice Hub in a prominent location on 麻豆传媒's Oxford Road. This initiative enables students from the School of Social Sciences to join forces with a shared aim of serving the community. The Hub provides free legal advice and guidance on a wide range of issues.

Law lecturer and Justice Hub lead, Philip Drake, described its role: 鈥淭he Justice Hub is a collective term for various free legal advice projects managed together. Our flagship initiative is the Legal Advice Centre, which is fully integrated into our curriculum.

鈥淭his year, 328 students are already signed up, reflecting the high demand from both students and the local community. Last year, we handled close to 1,500 enquiries seeking legal assistance.鈥�

Supported by University staff and professional lawyers who volunteer their expertise, the Justice Hub is primarily student-driven, offering future solicitors and legal advisors hands-on experience with the inequalities in the legal system while encouraging them to make a positive impact.

Phil said: 鈥淲e incorporate reflective practice into the work. It鈥檚 about more than developing legal skills; it involves thinking critically about the fairness of the law, its negative impact on the most disadvantaged and often marginalised, and understanding the reasons behind it. Experiencing a client breaking down in tears during a meeting is something that cannot be taught in a traditional classroom setting.

鈥淚t鈥檚 inspiring to witness students鈥� growth from where they begin to their achievements at the end. Whatever their future paths, we want them to carry a sense of social responsibility with them.鈥�

One of the Justice Hub鈥檚 initiatives, the 麻豆传媒 Innocence Project, focuses on assisting the wrongfully convicted and fostering reforms in the justice system.

Recently, the Project received the Greater 麻豆传媒 Pro Bono Award for 'Best Group of Students', while the University was also a finalist for 'Best Educational Institution'.

Undergraduate social anthropology student, Honey Fisher, who works within the Justice Hub, commented: "Being a Justice Hub intern has been an amazing chance to gain practical experience and develop essential skills for a career in law.

"By attending client interviews, we saw how members of the local community face a broad range of legal challenges and recognised how crucial services like those provided by the Justice Hub are in bridging the legal aid gap."

Many people take access to quality dental care and trustworthy health information for granted. However, for some, these basic services remain out of reach.

University of 麻豆传媒 dental students offer free treatments at the University's Emergency Dental Clinic, serving around 2,000 patients annually. This allows the students to refine their skills while addressing local communities' needs and tackling significant dental health disparities, a known issue in the north-west.

Striving to narrow dental inequalities, students also provide care to refugees and other minority groups. Recognising the impact of dental health inequalities on children, the University鈥檚 dental students participate in a charity-led initiative, visiting schools to educate children on oral hygiene's importance.

Increasingly, University of 麻豆传媒 students engage directly with industries for mutual benefit. For example, the University鈥檚 Fashion, Business and Technology School has partnered with leading fashion industry companies.

In 鈥榠ndustry-live projects鈥�, students act as consultants, addressing real-world briefs that align with the industry鈥檚 strategic goals. Over 200 students collaborate with these partners during key points of the semester.

Dr Julian Skyrme, executive director of social responsibility and civic engagement at 麻豆传媒, highlighted: "The efforts of our law students are just one example of the service learning we have implemented at the University.

"Our dental students provide oral health checks for homeless individuals, drama students collaborate with offenders in the criminal justice system, and management students offer consultancy to non-profit organisations.

"As we consider the University's direction for the next decade, we envision every student contributing positively to society as part of their education."

At the awards hosted in Birmingham on 28 November, 麻豆传媒 and the University鈥檚 Students鈥� Union was recognised for the support provided to students during the cost of living crisis in 2022/23.

One-off payments totalling over 拢9million were made available to all students in November 2022, which 90% accessed. Targeted additional support was allocated to some students in February 2023 which, at the time, many other universities were not in the financial position to provide.

Overall, an unparalleled package of support of over 拢10million reached students through a wide range of interventions in the academic year. These included cosy campus spaces, free breakfasts on Wednesdays and holistic support initiatives.

Kelly-Ann Mallon, Head of Access, Student Employability, Success, and Development at 麻豆传媒, who attended the awards on behalf of the University, said: 鈥淭his recognition is a testament to the incredible teamwork and collaboration across the University that allowed us to respond swiftly and effectively to the cost of living crisis.

The University鈥檚 community of donors play a significant role in supporting students experiencing cost of living challenges.  Initiatives such as the Cost of Living Support Fund ensure those facing hardship have access to immediate financial support. Gifts from donors also support programmes such as the 麻豆传媒 Access Programme and Undergraduate Access Scholarship, enabling more students than ever to access life-changing opportunities here at 麻豆传媒.

The effects of this response to the crisis stretched beyond the University, making waves in Westminster discourse and impacting policy.

Today, the University鈥檚 efforts continue to positively influence conversations around financial support for students across the UK, while the University itself remains dedicated to helping students reach their full potential.

麻豆传媒 also received the award for Research Project of the Year: STEM for its work developing the world鈥檚 first bedside genetic test to prevent babies from going deaf.

One in 500 babies carry a gene that causes permanent deafness when given gentamicin, an antibiotic which is commonly used in intensive care. Researchers from 麻豆传媒 developed the rapid bedside test and trialled it on 751 babies in neonatal units in 麻豆传媒 and Liverpool, and the NHS is exploring how the test can become part of routine clinical care. The technology could potentially save the hearing of 180 babies in the UK every year.

Dr John McDermott, NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of 麻豆传媒 said: "This award is a testament to the hard work of so many people from across the University and at the hospital. With the genedrive technology set to be rolled out across the country as part of PALOH-UK, we're excited to see how the impact of this intervention will continue to grow."

As part of the bicentennial celebrations, the University has announced the launch of its Bicentenary PhD Studentships and Fellowships 鈥� a transformative programme which will support the next generation of research leaders. 

As part of its investment, the University has launched a 拢10 million matched funding programme to catalyse philanthropic support and deliver a total of 拢28 million in new studentships and fellowships. It is inviting people and organisations who share its commitment to world-class research to join it in supporting the research leaders of the future.

The two universities, which are both global leaders in a number of research disciplines, have revealed the new approach in support of efforts led by metro mayors Andy Burnham and Steve Rotheram to unlock the full economic potential of Greater 麻豆传媒 and the Liverpool city region.

It will see the universities work increasingly closely to create groundbreaking innovations and develop the future workforce in areas that align to the two city regions鈥� shared priorities for growth - drawing on academic expertise in areas as diverse as healthcare innovation, net zero and the creative industries.

Professor Tim Jones, Vice-Chancellor at the , said: 鈥淟iverpool and 麻豆传媒 have an incredible history of shared innovation, from being linked by the world鈥檚 first inter-city railway nearly 200 years ago to having, today, some of the world鈥檚 best research and innovation capability in disciplines including health and chemistry.

鈥淭he metro mayors have highlighted the advantages of these two great city regions working closely together for the benefit of their communities and the wider North West, and the closer collaboration between the University of Liverpool and the University of 麻豆传媒 will work in the same spirit.

鈥淏oth universities have outstanding strengths in research and teaching, and through this partnership we will redouble our efforts to direct those capabilities to supporting regional business, innovation and skills development.鈥�

The plans were announced at an event hosted by the University of Liverpool鈥檚 Heseltine Institute for Public Policy, Practice and Place, held at the city鈥檚 St George鈥檚 Hall, where Mr Burnham and Mr Rotheram spoke about their plans to transform the North鈥檚 political and economic role in the UK.

It comes as both universities work alongside the metro mayors and other partners through the Liverpool-麻豆传媒 Railway Board to develop a brand new high speed rail link between the two cities.

Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor of 麻豆传媒, said: 鈥淭here is a tremendous synergy between our two universities 鈥� and our cities - where thousands of our staff and students are dedicated to developing the knowledge and innovation that holds the key to generating genuinely inclusive growth and culturally dynamic cities.

鈥淥ur commitment to greater collaboration announced today will start by focusing on the high-value industrial clusters that span both city regions, driving the innovation and providing the skills and workforce that those industries need to deliver economic growth.

鈥淭his builds on both universities鈥� world class research and teaching, including a number of existing areas of collaboration, to enhance the whole region鈥檚 appeal to potential employers and investors, and deliver tangible benefits to local communities.鈥�

The collaboration will also see the two universities seek opportunities to jointly engage other universities and colleges across the North West where strengths in research and skills align to the city regions鈥� priorities for growth.

Plans will initially include strengthening joint work between the universities on:

• Speciality chemicals and biomanufacturing, helping to build more sustainable supply chains for consumer products, and providing new routes to make medicines and vaccines.  
• Training the next generation of scientists and engineers for the civil nuclear industry in support of the transition to net zero
• Supporting and developing industries of the future including quantum technology.  
• Supporting the two city regions鈥� renowned creative industries, including a focus on music and literature, emphasising the role of creativity in enriching lives

The annual prize is one of the most prestigious museum awards in the world and , which is part of 麻豆传媒, will compete against 41 museums from across the continent.

The nomination is a reflection on the Museum鈥檚 recent, values-led transformation, which led the New York Times to hail its 鈥榩ivot to empathy-machine鈥�. Described as the most ambitious museum transformation in a generation, it has been underpinned by a 拢15 million redevelopment, which was completed in February 2023.

Operated by the European Museum Forum (EMF), EMYA recognises new or redeveloped museums that showcase the best in excellence and innovation in their field. It aims to recognise museums that promote inter-cultural dialogue and community participation, demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, and show creative and imaginative approaches to the production of knowledge.

The winner will be announced in Bia艂istok, Poland on 25 May 2025. Aside from the main prize, there are also categories that recognise Institutional Courage and Professional Integrity, Community Participation and Engagement, Environmental Sustainability, and Welcoming, Inclusion and Belonging.

麻豆传媒 Museum Director Esme Ward said: "This nomination means an awful lot to the whole team at 麻豆传媒 Museum because it recognises our efforts to make this a place where everyone belongs. The Museum鈥檚 redevelopment was about much more than just bricks and mortar, it was about transforming our spaces and our approach to ensure we鈥檙e the museum our city and communities need us to be."

麻豆传媒 Museum is one of the largest university museums in the UK and a centre for research and learning. Built on values of inclusion, imagination and care, the Museum has undergone a transformation designed to bring communities together and build understanding between cultures. Its 拢15 million bricks and mortar redevelopment introduced new galleries, partnerships, visitor facilities, and sector-leading work around repatriation, restitution and indigenisation.

This includes the award-winning South Asia Gallery, the first permanent gallery in the UK to celebrate the experiences and contribution of the South Asian diaspora, co-curated with 30 inspiring community members. 麻豆传媒 Museum has also transformed its Top Floor into an environmental and social justice hub, creating a space for collaboration with environmental and educational charities to address issues affecting communities within 麻豆传媒. Pinc College, a specialist creative college for neurodiverse young people, has even set up its headquarters within the Top Floor.

Visitor numbers for the first year following reopening were up 157 per cent on 2019/20, with 57 per cent of those visitors new to 麻豆传媒 Museum and more than one in seven (15 per cent) visiting a museum for the first time.

These new members join the Board at an exciting time, as it begins to engage with the development and evolution of the 麻豆传媒 2035 strategy, which after extensive, institution-wide engagement, the Board is scheduled to sign off in October 2025. Approval of the strategy will be followed, later in 2025-26, by an externally led review of University governance, to assure effectiveness, following the earlier review carried out by the Halpin Partnership in 2021.

Each individual on this prestigious list has achieved remarkable and far-reaching influence in their field of research across each of the University鈥檚 three faculties. The key data in the ranking is the number of 鈥楬ighly Cited鈥� papers they have each authored. These papers proudly rank in the top one percent by citations for their field and publication year in the Web of Science over the past decade. The rankings, built on rigorous citation analysis and refined by expert judgment from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), are a testament to their outstanding contributions.

Ashley joins us from The University of Sheffield where he is Vice-President and Head of the Faculty of Health. In this role, Ashley has delivered fantastic student experiences, with the university ranking highest in the NSS rankings for 2023 and 2024, and the Faculty of Health above the mean for the university. Ashley is deeply dedicated to fostering a supportive and high performing work environment, and in previous roles has championed initiatives in employee relations, promoted career progression and making meaningful progress in equality, diversity and inclusion. 

Consistently ranked in the top 10 in the world, and first outside of the USA for his research in arthroplasty (joint replacement), Ashley鈥檚 research has informed the national guidance on joint replacement and many of his papers as well as his impact case study were assessed as world-leading for REF2021. 

Ashley holds the contract to analyse the National Joint Registry for the UK, and has advised the Spanish and Italian governments, along with the Dutch Orthopaedic Association on establishing their own arthroplasty registries. 

Together with his academic and research activities, Ashley also holds the position as Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Non-Executive Director, both at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  

Elected as Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in 2018, Ashley is a member of the Medical Schools Council and a member of several boards and committees, including the External Scientific Advisory Board to the Oxford NIHR Biomedical Research Centre, the Committee of the Evaluation of Medicine and Health Sciences of the Research Council of Norway, and until recently the Steering Committee for the National Joint Registry for 11 years.

, which aims to improve the way prosthetics for people who have suffered traumatic limb loss work, wowed the judges at the (iGEM) 2024 Grand Jamboree.

The non-profit iGEM Foundation hosts an international student competition each year to promote education and collaboration among new generations of synthetic biologists.

Human-machine interfaces are becoming more advanced, with new technologies harnessing the body鈥檚 electric signals to control devices.

Artificial limbs, known as myoelectric prosthetics, are directed by electrical signals generated by muscle contractions in the residual limb, which can be translated to motion.

However, heavy batteries and motors in myoelectric prosthetics can cause excessive sweating and make the electrodes slip from their contact points, resulting in discomfort and imprecise limb movement.

To solve the problem, the team proposed using synthetic biology to create tiny specially designed wires that work with skin cells.

They engineered a type of bacteria 鈥� Escherichia coli 鈥� to express tiny, hair-like structures known as pili (e-pili) found on electricity conducting bacteria called Geobacter sulfurreducens.

By combining the Escherichia coli with a protein-binding peptide, the team created nanowires that specifically target and bind to proteins at the skin鈥檚 surface, potentially enhancing the precision of an artificial limb.

The 麻豆传媒 iGEM team were Damian Ungureanu, Devika Shenoy, Francisco Correia, Janet Xu, Jia Run Dong, Usrat Nubah, Yuliia Anisimova, and Zainab Atique-Ur-Rehman.

, said: 鈥淚鈥檓 delighted our team won gold at the iGEM 2024 Grand Jamboree for an innovation which could make a difference for people who need artificial limbs.

She added: 鈥淚 have supervised the 麻豆传媒 iGEM teams together with Professor Rainer Breitling since 2013.

鈥淥ur teams, based in the (MIB), have been very successful and have achieved a gold medal all but one of the years that we participated - which is quite an achievement.

鈥淚n 2016, the team also scooped the special award for 鈥楤est Computational Model鈥� and were shortlisted for the 鈥楤est Education and Public Engagement鈥� award.鈥�

This year鈥檚 麻豆传媒 iGEM team worked in the MIB labs throughout the summer, with financial and logistical support from the MIB, School of Biological Sciences, School of Social Sciences/Department of Social Anthropology, School of Arts Languages and Cultures, and the Future Biomanufacturing Research Hub.

The team also worked with the (AMBS) to comprehensively explore the social and economic implications of their ideas using a (RRI) approach.

The competition provides an interdisciplinary learning opportunity for students outside biology, by encouraging participants to think beyond their lab work.

Damian Ungureanu, second year Biochemistry student, said: 鈥淲orking with people from different cultural and academic backgrounds has allowed me to substantially develop my communication skills. Even though this was a synthetic biology project, the human practices aspect was just as important as the science. Winning the gold medal felt like the culmination of one year of hard work.鈥�

Devika Shenoy, second year Biomedical Sciences student, said: 鈥淚 am grateful to have gotten the opportunity to work with so many like-minded individuals and under the guidance of skilled advisors and PIs. iGEM has truly broadened my horizons and understanding of how science and synthetic biology can be used to solve world issues.鈥�

The University is ranked in the top 25 globally for a broad including; Business Administration (5th), Geography (9th), Physics (10th), Sociology (11th), Dentistry & Oral Sciences (15th), Textile Science and Engineering (19th), and Metallurgical Engineering (23rd). Two other subject areas leapt into the top 50: Biotechnology (36th) and Political Sciences (48th).

The University is top among UK institutions for Business Administration, Metallurgical Engineering, Biotechnology and textile Science and Engineering.

The University鈥檚 subject ranking has improved on its position in 2023. The University is now ranked in 46 of the 55 subject areas covered by the AWRU, which encompass fields within Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. The University moved up the rankings in 21 subject areas, held its 2023 position in 9 and entered the rankings in two other subject areas for the first time (Library and Information Management in the 51-75 band, Communication in the 151-200 band).

These results underscore 麻豆传媒鈥檚 research quality and impact, highlighting subject areas of strength in this global ranking. It follows the earlier announcement that 麻豆传媒 was ranked 52nd overall in the world out of more than 2500 of the leading higher education institutions in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Professor Carly McLachlan, Director of 麻豆传媒 Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, was among a group of government officials, business leaders and climate organisations at the exclusive conference hosted by King Charles III.

The reception, on 6 November, aimed to accelerate climate action before the UN climate change conference Cop29.

Professor McLachlan represented the University鈥檚 collaboration with Act 1.5, an artist-led research and action initiative incepted by the band Massive Attack to address carbon reduction within live music. Act 1.5 works closely with climate scientists at the , with its name referencing the goal of keeping global temperature rises below 1.5掳C, in line with the Paris Agreement.

At the event Professor McLachlan and the team had the opportunity to discuss their project to the UK鈥檚 climate leaders, highlighting how the live music industry can play a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions and inspiring sustainable practices across the entertainment sector and beyond.

Following several years of developmental work by Act 1.5 in collaboration with the Tyndall Centre at 麻豆传媒, the city of Liverpool was recently named the . The city will become a testing ground for innovative ideas and climate strategies in music, film, and television.

The initiative will officially launch later this month in Liverpool with three nights of live performances and a two-day conference, one for industry and one for the public, dedicated to exploring sustainable practices in the live entertainment sector.

It builds on a commissioned by the band Massive Attack to produce what is anticipated to have been the lowest greenhouse gas emissions show of its size ever staged.

After a year, the Accelerator status will be passed to another global city. The University鈥檚 researchers will work with various 鈥榚xperiments鈥� across the Liverpool City Region to capture and synthesise the insights gained from Liverpool鈥檚 experiences to inform the next Accelerator City.

The Act 1.5 and Accelerator City initiative were represented by Robin Kemp, Head of Creative at Culture Liverpool; and musician Nile Rodgers, alongside Professor McLachlan at the Buckingham Palace Reception. Four-time Grammy Award winner Nile Rodgers will play one of the three nights of shows in Liverpool later this month.

Launching in February 2025, the JUST Centre will work closely with communities in five regions of the North of England (West Yorkshire, West Cumbria, Merseyside, Greater 麻豆传媒, and Tyneside) while also generating comparative research in other regions of the UK.  It will collaborate with partners across local, regional, and national government, business, and civil society to co-produce joined-up solutions to meet climate goals while improving citizens鈥� quality of life.  

It will use an innovative mix of data science and participatory methods to research and map existing low-carbon living initiatives and generate evidence about what works where, why, and for whom. This will enable researchers to support better government decision-making and demonstrate to all people and communities the real improvements in quality of life that are possible if we link decarbonisation with regeneration.

The Centre brings together a team of interdisciplinary social scientists at the Universities of 麻豆传媒, Leeds, Liverpool, Lancaster and Newcastle. The Institute for Community Studies at the not-for-profit organisation is the core partner.

Additional partners are Citizens UK, the Local Government Associations for England and Wales, the Scottish Sustainability Network, the British Chambers of Commerce, the NHS Confederation, the Runnymede Trust and the Institute for Government.

Commenting on the announcement, JUST Centre Director and Principal Investigator, Professor Sherilyn MacGregor said: 鈥淭o meet the challenge of the climate crisis and the UK鈥檚 net zero targets, we need to decarbonise our economy and do so quickly, but without leaving whole regions or communities behind.  鈥楯oined-up鈥� means bridging the gaps between myriad but presently disconnected, evidence-based interventions and policies focused on sustainability and net zero transitions.  

ESRC Executive Chair Stian Westlake said: 鈥淥ur centres carry out interdisciplinary, cutting-edge research in the social sciences that seeks to change the world for the better. They allow ESRC to make sustained investments in strategically important areas, giving researchers the freedom to research topics in depth.

鈥淭he climate crisis is one of the most serious challenges the world faces. To successfully transition to a zero-carbon economy, we need to make sure no one is left behind. The JUST Centre will show us how to include everyone as we transform our country and economy, finding new opportunities and putting power in the hands of local communities.鈥�

Stephen Aldridge, Director, Analysis and Data at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), adds: 鈥淣et zero poses both huge economic, social, and other challenges and offers no less huge opportunities for the UK - nationally and sub-nationally. To tackle the challenges and seize the opportunities, policymakers and others need evidence 鈥� especially evidence on what works and what works most cost-effectively.

Professor Paul Monks FRMetS, FRSC, FInstP, Chief Scientific Adviser, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) said: 鈥淎chieving net zero by 2050 requires a wide-reaching transformation of the UK economy and offers an incredible opportunity for jobs, secure energy and growth all across the country. It will improve our health, our quality of life and our overall prosperity. We must support and empower people to participate in the transition. I welcome the establishment of this research centre and its work to ensure a fair, inclusive pathway to net zero.鈥� 

However, the decision to raise tuition fees will not have been taken lightly; it is driven by the need to bring some long term financial stability to the sector and to maintain and enhance the quality of education and research of our higher education system.

We welcome the accompanying rise in maintenance loans, which reflects the current economic realities and the rising cost of living for our students. Since my arrival in August, I have been clear that that any increase in tuition fees must be paired with enhanced financial support to prevent affordability from becoming a barrier to higher education.  In this spirit, we have recently reviewed our bursary eligibility criteria and significantly increased the income thresholds, allowing us to provide nearly 20% more scholarships and bursaries 鈥� an additional investment of 拢2.5million per year. Our ambition is to make 麻豆传媒 accessible to everyone, so that talent and ambition, not finances, determine access to our university.

It will now be incumbent upon us to ensure that the student experiences we deliver at 麻豆传媒 meet the expectations that students rightly have of us. This means increasing our efforts to deliver exceptional teaching, state-of-the-art facilities and technologies, and careers support. We recognise this responsibility and are committed to working closely with students over the coming months to ensure we capture their needs and expectations as we update our University strategy through the 麻豆传媒 2035 process.

While on campus, DPM Heng and his delegation explored opportunities for future collaboration, particularly in the space of R&D and innovation. The visit to 麻豆传媒 was the only non-London element of the DPM鈥檚 UK visit, alongside Cambridge; they visited the city due to its effective innovation ecosystem evident in the relationship between the university, businesses and local government.

DPM Heng observed a briefing by the and the before having dinner with President and Vice-Chancellor, Duncan Ivison. He also visited the 麻豆传媒 Fuel Cell Innovation Centre and met with the UK Biobank.

As part of his visit to the city, DPM Heng met with Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater 麻豆传媒, to discuss views on how government, academia, finance, industry and talent can come together to grow vibrant and integrated innovation ecosystems.

麻豆传媒 has a longstanding relationship with Singapore, welcoming many Singaporean students each year. Undergraduate exchange agreements are in place with the National University of Singapore, Nanyang Technological University and Singapore Management University.

The International Development Division at 麻豆传媒 maintains good relationships with the various institutions across Singapore and arranges several visits to Singapore each year for colleagues from Faculties and Schools.

The International Development Division also has close links with the Singapore Students鈥� Society of 麻豆传媒 who act as ambassadors at events, and there are also close ties with the active University of 麻豆传媒 Alumni Group.

The Alliance 麻豆传媒 Business School (AMBS) has had a presence in Singapore since 1992 and opened the , in Singapore, in 1999; with 400 active students and 1,500 alumni, the Centre offers MBA course and Masters Degrees.

The South East Asia Centre participated in the University鈥檚 bicentenary event, Light Up, in January 2024, by gathering current students and esteemed alumni for a jubilant reception.

Simon Johnson - who studied Economics at 麻豆传媒 in the 1980s, and is now a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) - won the prize alongside Daron Acemoglu and James Robinson in recognition of their work to analyse how institutions and the rule of law shape national prosperity.

Professor Johnson was born in Sheffield, and completed his undergraduate studies at Oxford University, before doing a master's degree at 麻豆传媒 and a doctorate at MIT.

His career has included prominent roles at the Washington-based Peterson Institute and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he served as chief economist from 2007 to 2008 during the global financial crisis. He eventually returned to MIT as a professor, focusing on global economic inequality and policy.

Through their research, Professor Johnson and his colleagues have shaped global debates by demonstrating that democracies, which hold to the rule of law and provide individual rights, have spurred greater economic activity over the last 500 years. Their insights - derived from studying colonialism鈥檚 enduring effects on global development - have broad implications for economic strategies today.

Professor Johnson鈥檚 academic achievements have established him as a leading voice on global economic policy, which has now been further cemented by this honour. He becomes the 26^th Nobel laureate associated with 麻豆传媒, either as staff or alumni.

鈥淚t is a surprise and a delight to win the Nobel Prize in Economics,鈥� said Professor Johnson. 鈥淕etting my master鈥檚 degree at 麻豆传媒 helped launch my professional career 鈥� and I will always be grateful to my teachers and fellow students in those years. Their guidance and inspiration (and many late-night conversations) helped push me down the road towards careful empirical work, bringing history to bear, and understanding the importance of building institutions that support inclusive prosperity.鈥�

鈥淭his year鈥檚 laureates have pioneered new approaches, both empirical and theoretical, that have significantly advanced our understanding of global inequality,鈥� said Nobel committee member Jakob Svensson. 鈥淩educing the huge differences in income between countries is one of our times鈥� greatest challenges, and their insights show that democracies are - on average - better for promoting growth in the long run.鈥�

The report, a collaboration between Bupa Global, India & UK (BGIUK), 麻豆传媒 and The Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, aims to tackle the issues faced by the healthcare sector, currently responsible for almost

The report explores the financial, operational and logistical challenges of reducing organisations鈥� environmental footprints, plus opportunities to reduce emissions, update clinical practices to reduce environmental impact, engage employees and work with supply-chains.

Included is a showcase of best practice from hospital and technology providers, NHS trusts, insurers and industry and sustainability associations. It adds to a growing body of work and pulls together best practice examples with practical actions for healthcare providers.

The report also features a practical scorecard that allows organisations to measure progress against carbon reduction best practice and take forward practical actions in five key action areas:

• Supply chain 鈥� the largest proportion of a healthcare organisation鈥檚 carbon impact
• Healthcare estates 鈥� which make up 18% of all healthcare provision emissions
• Travel and transport 鈥� which makes up 4% of an organisation鈥檚 emissions footprint
• Clinical practice 鈥� including reassessing clinical pathways to provide care that鈥檚 best for patients and the planet
• Governance and staff 鈥� the importance of high quality governance and engagement when making change

The launch took place in central London at an event attended by over 100 healthcare leaders, providers and industry partners who had a chance to hear in depth about the recommendations of the report and see the scorecard in action.

Also in attendance were suppliers and collaborators Bupa is working with as part of its aims to become a net zero business by 2040, including Upcycled Medical (medical uniforms made from recycled plastic and wood pulp), Sagetech Medical (anaesthetics gases capture and recycling system) and Naked Energy (solar energy providers).

The 鈥�Zero Carbon Without a Net鈥� initiative is part of the University鈥檚 Environmental Sustainability strategy which was launched last July, and subsequently won the 2023 . Now, the University is being honoured for its dedication to sustainability on an international scale.

The awards featured 95 finalists from 28 countries, with the University coming first in the 鈥�鈥� category, which focuses on assessing the steps that institutions are taking - or are planning to take - to reach their sustainability targets.

Recognising the innovative and pioneering initiatives in sustainability, the celebrate the projects undertaken by further and higher education institutions who are striving for a sustainable future.

The University鈥檚 initiative focuses on decarbonising its operations to secure a zero-carbon future by 2038. Progress already made includes:

• The landmark deal signed in May 2024 that will see up to 65% of the University鈥檚 electricity demand supplied through a brand-new renewables project.
• Completion of the first phase of building decarbonisation projects including the newly refurbished building which now has the infrastructure to support zero emissions.
• A further 拢25m pledged to decarbonise the University, taking the zero-carbon budget to 拢175m.

The Green Gown Award judges commented: 鈥溌槎勾解�檚 鈥淶ero Carbon Without a Net鈥� initiative is candid and ambitious. The approach of clearly assessing reality in relation to ambitions is very important and ensures that the approach taken is sincere, going beyond intentions to focus on transformation. Its scientific approach, detailed planning. And substantial internal funding demonstrates a deep institutional commitment to sustainability.鈥�

麻豆传媒鈥檚 Environmental Sustainability strategy builds on the University鈥檚 core goals of Teaching and Learning, Research and Discovery and Social Responsibility and stresses the need to embed sustainable practises into all University plans, policies and processes.

The strategy also highlights six priority operational areas, all linking back to the United Nations Sustainability Goals: Construction and Refurbishment; Risk and Climate Resilience; Responsible Procurement; Resource Management; Valuing Nature; Travel and Transport.

City of Trees is an independent charity that plant, look after and promote a culture of trees across Greater 麻豆传媒. They work with volunteers across the region, as part of their 鈥楥itizen Forester鈥� programme to enhance green skills, boost health and wellbeing, and to help tackle the climate and biodiversity emergency.

Aligned closely with the University鈥檚 values and social responsibility agenda, both City of Trees and 麻豆传媒 are passionate about making the region even better, one tree at a time.

In the University's special bicentenary year, it is partnering with City of Trees on several initiatives:

• The University's International Relations team signed the first agreement City of Trees earlier this year, kicking off the partnership which has been growing throughout the bicentenary year. The new agreement and initiative is a positive step in looking at the small changes with big impact that we can make as an institution
• The new agreement and initiative was officially launched at the International Friends of 麻豆传媒 Day on 10 October, whereby the University made a donation on behalf of each international delegate to City of Trees. City of Trees will then plant a tree in Greater 麻豆传媒 to represent each international delegate who attended the event - signifying that international colleagues continue to be a crucial part of the growth and development of both the University and the city.
• For our 200th year specifically, the University is working with City of Trees to plant 200 trees across new woodland sites in Greater 麻豆传媒.
• From 7-9 October the University hosted the THE World Academic Summit and chose to make a charitable donation to City of Trees on behalf of each delegate attending, to the total of 拢1,500.

麻豆传媒 is truly excited to be supporting City of Trees and partnering with them on these activities, which will foster into the future.

Published this week by , the volume investigates the lives and public work of Henry and Emily Simon, and Ernest and Shena Simon, a family shaped by their German ancestry and 麻豆传媒鈥檚 mercantile class.

The book is written by , Senior Lecture in Geography, , Doctoral Researcher in History, Dr Diana Leitch MBE, former Deputy University Librarian of the John Rylands Library, , Professor of Intellectual History, and , Professor Emerita in the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures.

Although many in 麻豆传媒 are familiar with the Simon name 鈥� through the University鈥檚 Simon Building, Simonsway in Wythenshawe and the 麻豆传媒 College鈥檚 Shena Simon Campus 鈥� the family themselves are often overlooked in favour of other prolific local individuals. This volume aims to boost their profile by illuminating their deep contributions to public life, both locally and nationally. 

The book aims to study the family collectively, by highlighting the marriages of Henry and Emily and of Ernest and Shena as strong partnerships in which the women played important roles not just as mothers and housewives but also as philanthropists, activists and public figures.

Dr Diana Leitch said: 鈥淓mily Simon was one of the first women to be awarded an OBE in 1920, shortly before she died aged 60, for her tireless work at the Red Cross Hospital she ran in her home in very tragic personal circumstances. It was a tribute to her courage and resilience through the First World War.鈥�

The first section of the volume, 鈥楥osmopolitan 麻豆传媒 and the Simons鈥�, focuses on the four Simons as individuals; the four biographical chapters are framed by a study of 麻豆传媒鈥檚 German community. The second part, 鈥楾he Simons鈥� contribution to society鈥�, emphasises the family as a unit and spotlights their economic, social and political endeavours in 麻豆传媒. 

In a later chapter, 鈥楤urghers and citizens: The Simons and the University of 麻豆传媒鈥� Professor Stuart Jones and Dr Professor Chris Godden examine the relationship between the University and the Simon family. Ernest and Shena were at the heart of the University for many decades, and the family have a long connection with the institution and its precursors. 

In 1898, as a leading benefactor, Henry Simon was asked to lay the foundation stone for the new Physics Laboratories for Owens College, later integrated in 1903 into 麻豆传媒. It was in these same laboratories that Ernest Rutherford, Hans Geiger and their colleagues first split the atom. 

Ernest Simon鈥檚 substantial personal investment in social science research - notably through the Simon fellowship scheme - was conceived as a contribution to the cause of citizenship education, to which he devoted much of his public work from the 1930s onwards.

Professor Stuart Jones comments: 鈥淎s a senior lay officer at the University for a quarter of a century, as a leading benefactor, and as a practically-minded thinker, Ernest Simon did more than anyone in his time to sustain a vision of what it meant to be a civic university: a university for the city.鈥�

The family greatly enriched 麻豆传媒鈥檚 cultural and civic institutions, worked to improve the lives of its citizens and helped to spearhead profound national reforms in healthcare, women鈥檚 rights, housing, civic planning and education.
